Time & Place for Considering Optimism & Light
Time & Place for Considering Optimism & Light is a new series of experimental prints begun during pandemic sheltering-in-place, working within the confines of my home boundaries. Each print is a unique result of a combination of positions of sun, negative and paper. Making cyanotypes outdoors is very time, season and place specific. The angle of the sun moves across the year.
Retreating into our home space, keeping within our small life, during these phases of the pandemic, in a world full of uncertainty, awash in disturbing events, much is surrendered. What I still have is time and place; time and place to process the world, my life, our life together, my impulse to seek beauty and joy. Being optimistic now, savoring the brilliance and small wonders of the natural world, is not the same act as it was before the pandemic. Humming Irving Berlin's Depression-era lyrics - "nothing but blue skies do I see" - feels awkward, suspect, irresponsible, bitter.
These prints are made by placing gigantic negatives over large sheets of cyanotype-sensitized paper under sunlight on a mobile work table set out of doors. To play with distortions of light and shadow, sometimes during exposure I move paper; sometimes I raise or lower my negative or warp it; sometimes multiple times.
There are about two dozen monotypes so far. 38 inches by 25 inches. Cyanotype light-sensitive emulsion on Japanese-made kozo/abaca paper, waxed. 2020.
